Fall River Metal Roofing Review: Why We Chose Interlock Aluminum Shingles Over Steel for Our 5000 Sq. Ft. Home

★★★★★

We hired Maritime Permanent Roofing (an Interlock Roofing company) to install a new metal roof. A lot of metal roofs that get installed are steel "barn-board" roofs that are screwed down. If you can't see the fasteners, you've installed a better quality roof called "standing seam". So we were trying to decide between standing seam and metal shingles. In the end, we decided we liked the look of shingles better, so we went that route. What differentiates MPR from other roofers is that they use aluminum (which oxidizes with a protective coating, rather than rusting, like steel). Living in a province where you're not too far from the ocean in any direction, this was important to us. So our first contact with the company was with "Greg" who handles the sales. He was quick to give us a quote (for "slate" shingles in a "musket grey", one of 9 colour options). I'm not going to lie to you, it wasn't cheap. We live in a large bungalow, so with a 5000+ sq.ft roof the costs add up quickly. Asphalt shingles would have been less than half the price, but we knew we were installing solar panels, so asphalt was not an option (asphalt shingles just don't last like they used to... they are made more cheaply, using less asphalt and more fiberglass). So we signed the contract and were given a start date of 2 months out. Our next contact was with "Chris" (Greg's brother... yes, it's a family business). He is the operations manager. Both Greg and Chris were laid-back and easy to talk to and generally seemed like nice/good people. I'm always happy when I hire good people. Chris showed up the first week of November to deliver all the materials to site and he informed me that the install crew would arrive on the weekend to start the job. So on Sunday Nov.7th "Janner", the installation foreman, and his crew showed up. They were a crew of 6 men!! As we have a large complicated roof with multiple dormers, many ridges and valleys and multiple facets with several different roof pitches, it wasn't a job for amateurs. Janner and company were very friendly and willing to answer questions openly, and they were very professional. Everyone in the crew had been formally trained by the parent Interlock company (which is based in British Columbia) and they had been installing Interlock Roofing for over 10 years, so they knew what they were doing. Luckily, the weather was good (for the most part) and they finished the job in 4 days. We are quite happy with our new roof, which has now prepared us to install solar panels. Greg, Chris and Janner were all good people and all professionals. I highly recommend MPR if you are considering installing a metal roof. I'm quite sure an aluminum shingle roof will outlast a steel barn-board roof, but I will update this review in a couple/few years to report on how the roof is holding up and whether or not there are any leaks. ps: Interlock Roofing is a Canadian company, who designs and manufactures their own aluminum shingles, they even make their own ringed aluminum nails.

  • Can I add solar panels to an Interlock Metal Roofing System?

All our products are solar compatible. Our solar brackets can be installed to house solar crystalline panels.

  • How much does an Interlock Metal Roofing System cost?

Our product is not an off-the-shelf roofing material. Plus the installation procedures vary from structure to structure. For instance, a home with a 3/12 pitch is easier for our installers to work on therefore labour costs will be less expensive. A home with no valleys, chimneys, skylights, or dormers will also be less expensive. Please contact Laurie for pricing info.

  • Are metal roofs loud?

Our customers keep telling us that their new Interlock Roof is no noisier than their previous asphalt shingle roof.

  • Do you offer financing?

Yes! We’ve partnered with Financeit and Simply Financing Group to offer you affordable monthly, bi-weekly and weekly payment options for your purchase. Visit our Financing page for more info.

  • Does a metal roof attract lightning?

No, a metal roof will not make lightning more likely to strike, but it may make a lightning strike less dangerous if it occurs. A conductive metal roof gives lightning a low-resistance path to the earth.

  • Are metal roofs hot?

All Interlock Metal Roofs are coated with the Alunar® Coating System. The "Cool Roof" ceramic pigment technology in the coating reflects and emits more of the sun's UV rays from entering the attic space. Interlock Metal Roofing Systems are energy-efficient CRRC rated (Cool Roof Rating Council).

  • Do metal roofs protect against hail?

All Interlock® Roofs are made from heavy gauge aluminum which has been tested and has surpassed the industry standard measurement for impact resistance: UL 2218 — Standard for Impact Resistance of Prepared Roof Covering Materials.

  • Can you walk on a metal roof?

While it is safe to walk on, in accordance with manufacturers’ instructions, the low-maintenance Interlock® Roof almost eliminates that need.

  • What metal is an Interlock Roof made from?

All Interlock® Roofs are available in heavy gauge aluminum coated with the Alunar Coating System.

In addition, solid copper is also available in all profiles.

  • Can I install an Interlock Roof myself?

While some of us enjoy a good DIY project, to keep the integrity of our Lifetime Limited Warranty we only use certified Interlock crews for installation.

  • Is Interlock Roofing available in my area?

Interlock Lifetime Metal Roofing Systems are available all across Nova Scotia, PEI, and Southern New Brunswick.
