Aluminum shingles in the Maritimes
Aluminum shingles are stamped aluminum roofing panels that can't rust, because there is no steel inside them. Interlock® aluminum shingles interlock on all four sides with the fasteners concealed, are made in Canada, and are installed across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI by our own company.

What makes an aluminum shingle different
An aluminum shingle is a stamped aluminum panel with a baked finish. Unlike a steel shingle, there is no steel core under the finish, so there is nothing to rust if the finish is scratched or cut, even in salt air. The exposed aluminum forms an oxide film that blocks further oxidation (ASM International).
Interlock® aluminum shingles lock to each other on all four sides. The fasteners sit under the course above, out of the weather, so the roof has no exposed screw heads and no rubber washers to age in sun, salt and frost.

Profiles and colours
Slate is the top seller today. Cedar Shingle and Shake give the look of a Maritime cedar roof without rot or splitting, and suit saltboxes, farmhouses and century homes; Mediterranean Tile suits the occasional Spanish or Italianate home. Nine colours: Solid Copper, Copper Penny, Hunter Green, Black, Deep Charcoal, Musket Grey, Tile Red, Colonial Brown and Tudor Brown.
On Maritime homes in our job book: 3,575 roofs in the legacy Interlock Shingle profile, the most common here and no longer made, then Slate 1,642, Cedar Shingle 273, Shake 11 and Mediterranean Tile 8.
Aluminum shingles in a Maritimes year
Salt air
The panel has no steel in it for salt spray to rust. On the coast, rinse salt and dirt off from the ground with a hose now and then, and never use a pressure washer.
Freeze-thaw
The panel absorbs no water, so the thaws and hard freezes of a Maritimes winter have nothing to split or loosen, unlike asphalt granules or wood.
Wet snow
Aluminum sheds snow. Snow guards go where a slide would land on people, decks or cars, planned at the estimate.
Ice dams
No roof stops ice dams on its own: they come from heat loss and ventilation, and ice damming is a stated exclusion of the material warranty. We look at your attic with you.
Impact rating
Interlock's Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake and Mediterranean Tile aluminum panels carry a UL 2218 Class 4 impact rating, listed by Intertek under Delta Building Products.
UL 2218 drops steel balls of increasing size on a roof sample; Class 4 is the highest class in the test. It tells you the panel resisted cracking in that test, not that nothing can mark it: large hail or a falling branch can dent aluminum, dents are treated as cosmetic, and the Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty excludes hail larger than 38 mm (1.5 in).
Questions, answered
What are aluminum shingles?
Aluminum shingles are roofing panels stamped from aluminum sheet and finished with a baked coating, made to look like slate, cedar shingle, shake or tile. Interlock® aluminum shingles interlock on all four sides with concealed fasteners.
Do aluminum shingles rust in salt air?
No. Aluminum forms a thin oxide film that blocks further oxidation, and there is no steel inside an aluminum shingle to rust, so salt spray has no steel core to attack.
Are aluminum shingles better than steel shingles?
Aluminum can't rust and is about one-third the density of steel. Steel shingles usually cost less up front and depend on their zinc or aluminum-zinc coating to keep from rusting, which is the part salt air works on.
How thick are Interlock aluminum shingles?
0.019 in (0.483 mm) nominal base thickness, aluminum alloy per ASTM B209, according to the manufacturer's specification.
Can I replace my old Interlock Shingle roof with today's profiles?
The legacy Interlock Shingle is no longer made. When a roof is replaced, today's choices are Slate, Cedar Shingle, Shake, Mediterranean Tile and Standing Seam. Call us and we'll look at the roof with you.
Where can I get aluminum shingles installed in the Maritimes?
Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd., founded in 2007, installs Interlock® aluminum shingles across Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and PEI from one office in Dartmouth. Our job book holds 5,581 Maritimes roofs, the first in 1995. Call (782) 825-6416.
Can aluminum shingles be installed over asphalt?
A single layer of asphalt can be roofed over only if our inspection finds it suitable. Cedar shakes, concrete tile and natural slate always come off first.
