Built for Nova Scotia

Salt air, storms and wet snow. A roof that cannot rust.

Maritimes weather is salt air and fog on the coast, Atlantic winter storms and post-tropical storms, and winters that freeze, thaw and freeze again under wet snow. Here is what an Interlock® aluminum roof does about each, and where it has limits.

Salt air

Aluminum cannot rust

Salt spray, fog and wind-driven rain come with a Nova Scotia address, from Halifax Harbour and the South Shore to the Fundy shore and Cape Breton, and salt is what wears out steel roofing once its coating is breached. Aluminum reacts with oxygen to form a thin, tough oxide layer that seals the metal against further corrosion and re-forms if scratched. There is no steel core in an Interlock® panel to rust, on the shore or inland.

Storms

Atlantic storms and post-tropical storms

Hurricane Fiona struck Atlantic Canada on September 24, 2022 and caused over $800 million in insured damage, the most costly extreme weather event ever recorded in the region. Interlock panels lock to each other on all four sides with the fasteners concealed, and wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification. No roof is storm-proof: hurricane-force wind damage is a matter for your home insurance, and it is excluded from our labour warranty.

Freeze-thaw

Melt, refreeze, repeat, under heavy wet snow

A Nova Scotia winter crosses the freezing mark again and again, often with rain on snow. Each cycle loosens asphalt granules and curls shingles; cedar takes on water that freezes in the grain. Aluminum absorbs nothing. Interlock panels weigh roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre, a fraction of concrete tile, which leaves the structure's capacity for wet snow, and smooth aluminum lets snow slide, so we plan snow guards over entries, walkways and the driveway at the quote.

Ice dams

We look at the attic, not just the roof

Ice dams form when heat escaping into the attic melts snow that refreezes at the cold eaves. No roof covering stops that on its own, and ice damming is excluded from the material warranty. At the estimate we look at insulation and ventilation with you and tell you what we see.

Wildfire

Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly

The Tantallon wildfire near Halifax in 2023 destroyed or damaged at least 200 properties, including 151 homes, and caused over $165 million in insured damage; the Barrington Lake fire in Shelburne County that spring was the largest wildfire in Nova Scotia's recorded history. FireSmart Canada says a Class A fire-rated roof assembly offers the best protection. Under ASTM E108 (CAN/ULC-S107 in Canada) a fire classification belongs to an assembly, not a panel: on our roofs Class A is achieved with two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood. Aluminum itself does not ignite, but no roof is fireproof. If your home backs onto woodland, ask us to quote the Class A assembly.

Finish

A finish made to keep its colour

The Alunar® finish is warranted for 30 years and has CRRC-rated solar reflectance from 0.25 to 0.44 depending on colour, and thermal emittance from 0.83 to 0.86.

What matters where you live

Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, Lower Sackville, Cole Harbour, Fall River, Hammonds Plains, Beaver Bank and Tantallon: harbour salt air, winter storms and suburbs on the edge of the woods. Our office is in Burnside, and Dartmouth has more Interlock® roofs in our job book than any other community in the Maritimes.

Salt air

Aluminum forms a protective oxide layer and cannot rust, so salt spray has no steel to work on.

Homes near the woods

The 2023 Tantallon fire reached the edge of the city. Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly; no roof is fireproof.

Older homes

The look of slate or cedar on a century home, a saltbox or a farmhouse, at roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre.

Why aluminum, for Nova Scotia metal roofing

Why Nova Scotia homeowners choose aluminum. And who stands behind it.

    Snow

Wet snow, freeze-thaw and ice dams

Nova Scotia winters swing above and below freezing, often with rain on snow. Interlock panels weigh roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre, a fraction of concrete tile, have nothing to crack or soak up water, and let snow slide rather than sit, so we plan snow guards over entries, walkways, decks and the driveway at the quote. Ice dams start with heat escaping into the attic, so we look at insulation and ventilation with you as well.

    Older homes

    Century homes, suburbs and cottages

Older homes in Halifax and Dartmouth, newer houses in Bedford, Fall River and Hammonds Plains, century homes in Lunenburg, Wolfville and Annapolis Royal, and cottages on the shore all take the same system. Interlock's Slate, Cedar Shingle and Shake profiles give the look of slate or wood at roughly 2 to 3.5 kg per square metre, a fraction of concrete tile or natural slate. Every profile needs a minimum 3/12 roof slope, and we confirm yours at the consultation.

    Condos

    Condominium complexes

In a Nova Scotia condominium the board of directors of the condominium corporation usually decides on the roof, often with a reserve fund study in hand. We give boards one profile and colour across every building, the product documents they ask for, and both warranties in writing.

    Our office

Our own crews, from our office in Dartmouth

We install every roof ourselves, from our office in Burnside, Dartmouth, and consultations are on Zoom or at your home anywhere in the province. The manufacturer's Guardian Lifetime Limited Material Warranty and our 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty come with the roof, and after the install, service comes from the same company.

    Recycled

    Up to 95% recycled aluminum

    All of our answers ↗

Who installs Interlock metal roofing in Nova Scotia?

We do. Maritime Metal Roofing Ltd. is the certified Interlock® roofing contractor for Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island, founded in 2007, with its office in Burnside, Dartmouth. Interlock® roofs have been going on Nova Scotia homes since 1995. The panels are made in Canada by Interlock Roofing at its plant in Delta, BC, and we install them with our own company. We are BBB Accredited with an A+ rating, Baeumler Approved, a Metal Roofing Alliance member, and winners of a 2026 GuildQuality GuildMaster Award.

Will a metal roof stand up to salt air on the Nova Scotia coast?

An aluminum one will: aluminum cannot rust. It reacts with oxygen to form a thin, tough oxide layer that seals the metal against further corrosion and re-forms if scratched, so there is no steel core to rust once a coating is breached. That matters on the coast, from Halifax Harbour and the South Shore to Yarmouth and Cape Breton. The Alunar® finish on the panels carries a 30 Year coating warranty.

How does a metal roof handle hurricanes and post-tropical storms in Nova Scotia?

Interlock panels lock to each other on all four sides with the fasteners concealed, and wind resistance is warranted to 193 km/h (120 mph) installed to manufacturer specification. No roof is storm-proof. According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, Hurricane Fiona, which struck Atlantic Canada on September 24, 2022, caused over $800 million in insured damage, the most costly extreme weather event ever recorded in the region. Damage from hurricane-force winds is a matter for your home insurance, and hurricane-force winds and wind storms are excluded from our 10 Year Limited Labour Warranty.

Is a metal roof a good choice for a home near the woods in Nova Scotia?

It is one of the better choices, as long as you know what the fire rating means. According to the Insurance Bureau of Canada, the Tantallon wildfire near Halifax in May and June 2023 destroyed or damaged at least 200 properties, including 151 homes, and caused over $165 million in insured damage, and the Province of Nova Scotia reports that the Barrington Lake fire in Shelburne County the same spring was the largest wildfire in the province's recorded history. FireSmart Canada says a Class A fire-rated roof assembly offers the best protection. On our roofs that is Class A Fire Rated Available, as a complete assembly: two layers of GAF VersaShield® over 12 mm (15/32-inch) plywood under the panels, per ASTM E108 (CAN/ULC-S107 in Canada). Aluminum does not ignite, but no roof is fireproof.

    Which communities does novascotiaroofing.com cover?

All of Nova Scotia: the Halifax Region (Halifax, Dartmouth, Bedford, Lower Sackville, Fall River, Cole Harbour and Tantallon); the Annapolis Valley (Kentville, Wolfville, New Minas, Windsor and Annapolis Royal); the South Shore (Bridgewater, Lunenburg, Mahone Bay, Chester and Liverpool); the North Shore (Truro, Amherst, New Glasgow, Pictou and Antigonish); Cape Breton (Sydney, Glace Bay, North Sydney and Port Hawkesbury); the Eastern Shore (Sherbrooke, Guysborough and Canso); and Western Nova Scotia (Yarmouth, Digby and Clare). New Brunswick is at newbrunswickroofing.com and Prince Edward Island at peiroofing.com. Same company, same Dartmouth office, same warranties.

How much does a metal roof cost in Nova Scotia?

Our metal roof cost page shows what Nova Scotia homeowners actually paid us: price ranges per square metre and for the whole roof, from our own 2025 and 2026 Nova Scotia contracts. Treat them as a rough guide only: prices vary from job to job with structural and other conditions, and an in-home roof consultation is required for accurate pricing. The biggest factors are roof area, pitch and complexity (valleys, dormers, skylights and chimneys), what has to come off, the profile you choose, and options such as snow guards or the Class A Fire Rated Available assembly. The consultation is on Zoom or at your home, you get a fixed price in writing, and any current offer is shown on this page.
